One of the many benefits of working with a custom home builder like HomeSource Custom Homes is your access to expert advice in the latest, eco-green building techniques. The nature of the custom build process is our customers are interested in being educated on the most energy efficient ways to build their home. As a result, HomeSource is thoroughly engaged in an ongoing discussion with our subcontractors and suppliers about products that provide sustainable, long-term value, both in terms of lower energy costs but also advanced construction methods.
A product we have been recommending is the Superior Wall foundation system, which feature patented, insulated, precast concrete wall panels that are formed in a factory-controlled setting and delivered to the new home job site, where the panels are lifted into position with a crane and carefully bolted together and sealed. The walls are custom-designed and built to virtually any architectural style, complete with window and door openings.
Superior Walls’ special 5,000+ psi concrete mix, engineered with a lower water-to-cement ratio, ensures durability and helps prevent the transfer of moisture through the wall. The specified crushed stone footing and perimeter drain tile system will result in water be directed away from your foundation, helping keeping your home dry. A dry basement will also limit the possibility of mold and other airborne fungus that can be found in traditional basements and affect air quality. A guaranteed 15 year manufacturer’s warranty provides you with the peace of mind of a dry, well insulated basement.
Research indicates that an uninsulated basement can account for over 33% of the total heat loss in a home. In addition, over 20% of heat loss through the basement occurs in the top 24 inches. The Superior Wall system features a continuous layer of 2 ½ inch “Dow” extruded polystyrene insulation with an R-12.5 insulation rating bonded directly to the concrete. The panels contain insulated concrete studs with galvanized steel facings, built-in holes for wiring and a stud cavity that provides access for plumbing. The built-in concrete studs allow room for the use of additional insulation if desired. With the built-in stud system already in place on the perimeter foundation walls, you will reduce your framing costs if you finish your lower level.
Nearly everything is insulated in the Superior Wall foundation system, including corners, studs and bond beams. Special engineering makes the wall thermally isolated and insulated from the exterior elements. The new wall is monolithically poured (poured all at once) with high-strength concrete for solid structural integrity and reinforced with steel rebar and polypropylene fibers. The system’s special high strength, low-water concrete mix also requires no additional damp-proofing. And it meets or exceeds energy conservation requirements from both the 2009 IECC and the 2009 IRC in most climate zones.
Superior Walls has become the seventy-first product and one of the first 25 manufacturers to have products approved to earn points toward the NAHB Research Center National Green Building Certification. This approval from the NAHB Research Center provides third party verification that Superior Walls Xi and R-5 Insulated Precast Concrete Walls comply with specific product green practice criteria as outlined in the National Green Building Standard.
